Maine might be known for its bright-red crustaceans and story-book-beautiful seasons, but this seafaring state has another attribute to boast about: more than 5,500 miles of coastline shaped by narrow estuaries, peninsulas, bays, coves and -- most importantly -- islands. That total measurement is surprising considering the eastern edge of this state is just about 225 miles long as the crow flies. Still, it has more coastline than California. Maine's 2,000-plus islands (including Monhegan Island, which is said to resemble a whale) help the cause. All those seashores provide lots of ocean-view options for your next lobster dinner.
