Get Here: Lésvos

Discover the sea flavors of this Greek isle

Salty sea air is the secret ingredient in traditional Greek dishes like grilled octopus and stuffed grape leaves served on this beach. And sea breezes are easy to come by because the restaurants that line Skala Eressou on the southwest coast of the Greek isle of Lésvos don't just face the beach -- they are on top of it. To sample the oceanfront views, travel first to Athens, where you can catch one of several daily flights aboard Aegean or Olympic Airlines to Lésvos' Mytilene International Airport. Follow the highway through the eastern part of the island -- past the beach town of Kaloní and through the rolling green hills in Parákila. When you find yourself in the village of Eressós, turn toward the sea and walk to Skala Eressou. Browse menus from the beach or the pedestrian-friendly main street for specialties like Taverna tou Sarantou's gouna (dried, spiced and grilled mackerel) or Adonis' boureki (a deepfried, pizza-like dish). Between the fresh-from-the-sea flavors and the uninterrupted sunset view, you'll be shouting, "Opa!" in no time.
