Mailboat: March 2009

Letters, e-mails, feedback, polls, travel tips and more

New Niue Fan
The article on Niue ("The Remote Eden," December 2008) taught me much about this South Pacific piece of paradise. Embarrassingly, I admit to knowing nothing about this atoll; I had never even heard the name in passing prior to reading this article. Author David Lansing painted a great, detailed picture of this spectacular island with his five do-and-don't rules as well as his description of the coconut crabs' incredible antics. I'm intrigued enough to take the next step and make this my next vacation. Thanks for the inspiration. -- B. Fujii, Eugene, Oregon

Sweet Cocos Memories
A smile came to my face when I read the article about Isla del Cocos ("Hidden Treasure Trove," December 2008). My family and I anchored there in 1984 while we were on the way to French Polynesia. The water was so clear at Cocos that you could see down 30 feet as if it were bath water. We saw more than 200 waterfalls as well as a World War II plane that had crashed into the jungle. I remember how green everything on the island was. Thank you for bringing back a wonderful memory. It's a place few have seen, and I'm glad I had this once-in-a-lifetime experience. -- Irene Salcito, via e-mail

Calendar Woes
I'm disappointed in the 2009 ISLANDS Calendar. The new horizontal format will not fit in the allocated space on my office wall. Therefore, the calendar is unusable for me this year. Please tell me if you intend to continue using this format in the future. -- Ed Zingone, via e-mail

Editor's note: We're very sorry to hear about your frustration with the 2009 ISLANDS Calendar, Ed. We wanted to showcase the great panoramic images by Macduff Everton and decided to try a non-traditional calendar shape. Look for the classic ISLANDS calendar format for 2010.

Cruisin' Along
We enjoy your magazine and use it as a reference source every time we plan a cruise. We have been on 10 cruises, and ISLANDS has never let us down; the information it gives prepares us to enjoy our time at the many ports where we have stopped. -- Gordy and Diane Flohr, Greenfield, Wisconsin

Aussie Island Advice
There is an island off the coast of Western Australia, Bedout Island, which I have tried to find information about, but even on the web it is a mystery. Can ISLANDS shed any light on this island? -- Beverly Boynton, via e-mail

Editor's note: Good question, Beverly. We got in touch with the Western Australia Visitor Centre and found out that Bedout Island is a fishing area. There are no accommodations on or tours to the island, but you can hire a chartered boat to navigate the reefs and currents around the island. Desert ISLANDS
My wife and I took a Mediterranean cruise in October. Of course I took one of my favorite magazines with me. On the drive from Alexandria, Egypt, to El Giza I enjoyed reading the November 2008 issue of ISLANDS. Then, when we got to the pyramids, I couldn't resist getting my picture taken with the magazine and King Djoser's step pyramid in the background (left). The memory will be with us forever, and thanks to great articles in ISLANDS, our next trip is already in the planning stage! -- Rick Gadd, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

What's Next Winner
Brad Davis of Oley, Pennsylvania, was looking into the solution to the "Guess What's Next" contest in the December 2008 issue even before he saw the photo of Petit St. Vincent ("Private Romance"). "I was researching Caribbean resorts for a romantic getaway," he says. "The description of there being no phones reminded me of this resort." Davis, chosen from a group of readers who correctly identified the photo, wins a prize package courtesy of ISLANDS and Petit St. Vincent. To enter this issue's contest, see what's in store for the April/May 2009 issue by identifying the photo on page 112, or click here.

Corrections
In the December 2008 issue, the caption on page 3 should have stated that the cover pictured an unnamed motu in the Aitutaki Lagoon. In the January/February 2009 issue, "Book Now" on page 94 should have stated that Tobago is 116 square miles.
