The mirror-calm surface of azure water in this Cook Islands lagoon is smooth enough to step on. Well, almost. At this spot in the Aitutaki Atoll, you can start at the island of Tapuaetai, pictured in the distance, then climb into a boat or simply dip your toes into the shallows and wade across the sandbar to this beach on an unnamed islet. For the larger journey here, fly through Los Angeles onboard Air New Zealand to Rarotonga, the commercial hub of the Cook Islands, then board a 45-minute transfer flight to Aitutaki. Arrange a lagoon cruise with Bishop Cruises to get to Tapuaetai, or One Foot Island. Situated in the southernmost corner of the atoll, this motu, or islet, is named for the story of a father who protected his son from enemies by hiding his footprints in the sand with his own. Record your own passage with a footprint in your passport; the Hideaway Hut's bartender wields an aptly shaped stamp. Then getting to this beach is simple: All you have to do is walk on water. cookislands.travel
