New Providence: Fall in Line
Enjoy this museum celebrating the Bahama's Junkanoo Festival

Love a parade? Then follow the pulsating rhythms of the Bahamas' most spectacular cultural street celebration to Educulture's Junkanoo Museum this holiday season. Located in curator Arlene Nash Ferguson's cozy childhood home just a five minute uphill walk from Nassau on the island of New Providence, this off-the-beaten-path treasure trove celebrates the colorful national festival of Junkanoo with a cornucopia of vintage costumes, bells and drums. The museum comes to life when Ferguson -- an educator and Junkanoo expert -- leads tours through exhibits that follow the festival's history: from the ripped newspaper worn by Bahamian slaves celebrating a scarce day off in the late 1800s all the way to the 90-pound confetti-hued confections that parade-goers don to celebrate life and freedom today. Inspired? Then turn plain cardboard into a plumed extravaganza in the costume workshop and watch the parade between midnight and 11 a.m. on Boxing Day, December 26, or on New Year's Day from 2 a.m. (when church lets out) to 11 a.m. You'll find out that the only thing better than watching a parade is taking part in one.
