Oahu: Worth More Than a Song
Tour a famous ukulele factory in Honolulu

Ukulele music is happy music. If you doubt it, take the morning tour at Honolulu's Kamaka Hawaii Inc. Here the founder's 84-year-old son, Fred Kamaka, begins the tour by grinnin' and pickin' on priceless instruments fashioned by his dad. In 1926, Sam Sr. improved upon the Portuguese braguinha and set the standard for modern, pineapple shaped ukuleles. Today, the Kamaka ukulele remains a timeless classic, handcrafted in prized koa wood with a signature, mother-of-pearl double K (for two Kamakas: Fred and his brother, Sam Jr.) inlaid in the mahogany neck. Kamaka ukuleles start at $650 and require a wait due to high demand, but the morning tour with Fred's musical stylings is free of charge. Even if you can't afford a souvenir -- you're guaranteed to leave on a happy note. kamakahawaii.com
