Think the only way to trek through the St. Lucian rainforest is on foot? Think again. Thanks to Rainforest Aerial Trams, which celebrates 15 years of eco-minded business in 2010, you can glide alongside high-flying warblers and bright-green Jacquot parrots in the lush canopy of the Castries Waterworks Forest Reserve.
The 1,800-foot-high system of cables and gondolas gives travelers a topside view of the richest part of the rainforest; more than 65 percent of this ecosystem’s life can be found in its uppermost level. Leave it to your naturalist guide to point out endemic St. Lucian species (like the brown-and-red peewee bird) and traditional medicinal plants (like the veven lache wat used to ease cold symptoms). There’s a lot to see because the company, which also has facilities in Costa Rica, Jamaica and Dominica, is committed to conservation; the life-rich trees in this 1,250-acre section of the park are guarded fiercely. Even during construction, helicopters brought in the towers to reduce the tread of feet and tractors and minimize the felled trees. It’s a fact you’ll be glad to know as you float among towering chatannier trees and fragrant magnolia flowers. When you see them from this angle, each and every leaf is essential.
