Kiteboarding Mauritius Island

“Mauritius Island” is a true postcard that you pin to your refrigerator. There are white beaches, mountains, waterfalls, lagoons and behind this a beautiful country. I will tell you the legend of a wave called "One Eye." People travel from all over the world to ride it. We love it, we respect it–but very few of us know the real story of this world class surf break.

Tips:

Climb Mt. Le Morne: Our guide Yan Maroussem took us to the top for a breathtaking view. Check out his website: http://www.trekkingilemaurice.com/

Learn to Kiteboard: Visit the Son of Kite surf school and ask for JC Galey. He's an outstanding teacher that can get anyone on the water. http://www.sonofkite.com/

Transportation: Rent a car at the airport. You'll need one to really see the island.

Grocerys: There is a supermarket in La Gaulette with everything you might need.

Must eat: Eat lunch at the Snack Cyril on the beach. It's cheap, and they have excellent chocolate crepes for dessert.

Nightlife: Nights are slow in Mauritius. After a full day on the water, we didn't have much energy to go out. Ocean Vagabond in la Gaulette wasn't a bad place for dinner and a few drinks. If you're looking for something more exciting drive 30 minutes to Flic en Flac for a wilder night.

Gear: If you're bringing your own kites, anything from 12m to 5m can work. The water is a bit chilly, so bring a wetsuit.

When: The windy season in Mauritius lasts from June to the end of October.
