I'm working on a special ISLANDS Wish List project -- "Find the Secret America" -- and I love this photo. This guy is acclaimed ISLANDS photographer Jon Whittle, and he's so happy because he's rowing in the Pacific Island off American Samoa. Tutu'ila Island, to be exact. Jon had an amazing trip there, which we're collecting into a digital photo book that we'll release later today. I'll give you a heads up in today's ISLANDS e-newsletter. (And no, Jon doesn't know I posted this.)

Three journalists share their mis-adventures while traveling around Cuba.
JOE YOGERST: On assignment in Cuba, I rented a car and was driving from Moron to Santa Clara, and the map was unclear. It was late in the day and I was running low on gas. I picked up this young guy at a round-about, hoping he could give me directions. Right away he pointed at a road, and off we went. But as it started getting dark (and my gas needle kept dropping), I began to think I’d been duped. About 90 minutes out, we came upon this tiny village, where he asked me to stop: This was his home. He leapt out of the car without a word—wouldn’t tell me if I was even close to Santa Clara. I headed back to Moron, running on fumes and cursing my trickster hitcher the whole way.
JAD DAVENPORT: After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, Cuba lost $6 billion in Soviet subsidies, and the public transportation system died. There were so few private vehicles and buses running between towns that people formed orderly queues at underpasses, offramps, etc. I stopped at an underpass outside Havana driving a Hyundai made for five small people. We crammed in 12. The cops waved me over and said, "Hey, you know it’s illegal to pick up hitchhikers?" I panicked; I was already in the country illegally...

I am wet, I am cold, and an endangered bird of prey just tried to kill my friend. Believe it or not, this is one of the best days of my life.
There is simply no good way to describe Sea Lion Island, the wildlife sanctuary considered to be the ‘jewel of the Falklands archipelago’. Every corner I turn brings me face to face with a scene that prior to this moment I had only seen on a Discovery Channel documentary. Want to see Elephant seals fighting? Sure-just go right over there. You say you’d like to plop down in the middle of 9000 Gentoo Penguins and have them wander up and sit literally right beside you? Just go out the back door of the lodge.
Honestly, there aren’t enough memory cards in the world to contain every photo that my trigger finger wants to create. If the in-your-face wildlife isn’t enough to whet that creative appetite how about dramatic cliffs and crashing waves, windswept plains or beautiful sheltered coves?
Here’s a sneak peek at some shots I grabbed while on the island. Look for my full photo essay in an upcoming issue of ISLANDS Magazine.

“Capt. Silas tells me to watch my head as the solid wood boom swings across our stern. This Carriacou sloop is rugged and fast, hand-built by nautical craftsmen, grizzled and tough like the masterpieces they construct. Taught by his father, Silas has been sailing the Caribbean’s Grenadine islands since he was 8. Now 32, he can smell direction on the wind, deftly maneuvering through the Tobago Cays, navigating submerged coral heads that could chew through a wooden boat like a T-Rex-size termite.
Despite all this rugged grooming, our intrepid captain commands a vessel dubbed The Pink Lady, his pale-pink polo shirt and the boat’s Barbie-pink hull a nod to his all-female racing crew and Silas’ daily bit of pride swallowing. ‘I just have to remember to change my shirt before I go home,’ he says. The color of the boat doesn’t characterize the captain, but it sure can embarrass him.” —Photographer Zach Stovall
