SIGN UP FOR ISLANDS IN YOUR INBOX
Following up my Charlottetown-specific post, here's a few more points of interest on the greater Maritime Canadian province of P.E.I.
FLY Air Canada through Montreal. Note, if you're flying back to the United States from Montreal, you clear U.S. customs before your flight. Leave extra time. I would've missed my connection there if the airline hadn't held it for several of us stuck in long lines. Some U.S. airlines fly direct to P.E.I. in the summer season from Boston, Chicago and possibly other cities depending on improving world economic fortunes.

STAY at Stanhope Bay & Beach Resort. This is a different kind of beach resort, if you're used to Turks & Caicos or similar. Picture waterfowl gliding into mirror-smooth estuarine waters, or similar. The doors open with old-fashioned keys, and the rooms have a comforting hint of rustic decor. An enhanced continental-style breakfast is included, enhanced with miniature quiches.
EAT fresh at Shipwright's Cafe in Margate. Chef Calvin Burt works hard in season, preparing seven dinners and five lunches a week. An old country house houses the restaurant, so it's like eating at your grandma's house if your grandma is a Canadian chef dedicated to presenting local flavors in a simple but sophisticated way. And indeed the chef says, "A lot of local housewives around here are very good cooks." He seems to take some inspiration from them. As part of Fall Flavors, seven of us toured some of Burt's favorite area sites — a beach, a cemetery — then ate a family-style paella made from local seafoods at what felt like a family dining table. It was good. So was the pumpkin pie made from his mother's recipe.
HIKE OR BIKE the Confederation Trail, which runs the length of the island along the former railway line. Packed gravel replaces the tracks. It's a great walking surface. If you're biking it, fatter tires will help. In winter, the trail is open only to snow mobiles, part of an originating compromise. It means you can't cross-country ski there, which is a shame. (The national parks and some other sites have groomed cross-country ski trails in winter.)

OR MOTOR around. I spent a day mostly lost and finding charming scenes. P.E.I. has hundreds of little towns with paved and unpaved roads connecting them, and each town has a church with attached cemetery. The island is 100 percent cultivated and sometimes called the million-acre farm. It sometimes feels like a million one-acre farms, signs replacing one another as you drive along. Either way the sense of civilized fertility accents every curve.
GO in season (June through September ... of 2010) if you want to venture beyond the towns and sample the best the island has to offer. (Notice the bundling clouds in most of these photos.) Many many inns and restaurants close for the long off season. For good island soft-serve ice cream, for example, iced from local cream, visit the Frosty Treat Dairy Bar in Kensington before or during its closing weekend in late September or early October. And when you go, eat your order promptly. Your combination dip cone is already melting.

Key West's Lobsterfest is this weekend, Aug. 7-9. Trust me--drop what you're doing right now and start packing. Your stomach deserves it.
Perfectly situated after last week's mini Lobster season and at the start of commercial season (Aug. 6 - March 31, 2010), this lobster-obsessed street fair promises the sweetest and most tender meat you can get. A Duval Street Crawl kicks off events Friday night, followed by the Saturday highlight of a Lobsterfest street fair where 20 local island chefs will demonstrate their creative and delicious ways to serve the spiny crustacean. Three days of lobster appetizers, lobster salads, grilled lobster, buttered lobster... What more is there to ask for?
If you're like me, you prefer slower modes of travel when you're touring an island. Kayaks and bicycles are my favorite, which is why I was especially excited to read about a Free Historical Monument Bike Tour being offered on Islamorada throughout July and August. The 2-hour tour will leave from the Hurricane Monument at mile 82 Oceanside at 10 a.m. every Saturday and Sunday all summer long. With islander Mark Terrill as guide, up to 16 riders will pedal past sites like the Islamorada's first established church and learn about the rich history of the Florida Keys as they make their way down the 6-mile route. Bring your own wheels or call Mark at 305-879-0390 ahead to reserve a bike.
