Mother and Daughter Explore Vanuatu

Tanna in the South Pacific

This is my 12- year-old daughter, Indigo, with Vanuatu’s local Yakel men who wear nothing but grass penis sheaths.

We’re on Tanna in the South Pacific. These men live in a “custom village,” meaning they want no part of Westernization. But they are very welcoming of us and seem amused to have a white child in their midst.

Indi wasn’t fazed by their lack of clothing. She craves astonishing things and doesn’t mind the long journeys, heat or her loony mother.

I love this picture because it shows she’s willing to take chances. I hope it lasts a long time.
