Pineapple

The goal: To find aloha spirit on a plate. Tongue twister: At a country market in the center of the island, I buy what looks like a pineapple with chili powder. The vendor looks at me funny when I ask what the red powder is. “You know, sistah, leeheemoo-ee.” I walk away no wiser. Speaking in tongues: The next day at Ted’s, a famous North Shore bakery, the counter help talks to me in rapid-fire pidgin. I find I actually understand it well thanks to my Trinidadian patois-speaking roots. Tickled pink: Shooting the breeze with a man sharing a table with me at a plate-lunch stand, I learn that the pink powder I see everywhere is li hing mui — pulverized salt plums, just like the ones I love to savor from Chinatown in my New York home. All choked up: Folks here like to “talk story” with me. At He’eia Pier in Kaneohe, an old lady asks if I’m the daughter of someone she knows. I say, “No, I’m from New York.” She waves her hand like swatting a fly. “Nah, you Hawaiian.”
