Japan has found its tourism industry particularly hard-hit after its recent, catastrophic earthquake and tsunami. However, to showcase that most areas of the island are fully open for visitors, the country has come up with a novel idea: it plans to use up to a billion yen to fund 10,000 airline tickets to bring in visitors who are bloggers, social media influentials and others who pledge to discuss their experiences online. Applicants - who would need to fund their own lodging and meals once arriving on the island - will be asked to provide details on the activities they're planning in Japan, what they think they'll get out of the trip and what kind of travelogue they'll be posting online. As the Japan Tourism Agency says:

“We are hoping to get highly influential blogger-types, and others who can spread the word that Japan is a safe place to visit,” said Kazuyoshi Sato, with the agency.

If the initiative is approved, signups will start in April 2012. Are you a higly influential blogger-type considering an application and looking for trip ideas to build out an itinerary? Browse the ISLANDS Japan Archive to learn more about experiences like the 14-course kaiseki feast, or explore our Japan Travel Guide for recommendations on resorts, itineraries and more.
