Photo Book: Shorebreak Art of Clark Little

Sand, water and sunsets – ingredients of any photo book I see here at ISLANDS. But The Shorebreak Art of Clark Little stood out as different. How? Its cover photo had me shuffling for higher ground.

Most sane people avoid heavy shore break. For the last three years, Clark has waded into Hawaii’s most deadly beach waves with his camera. The result: 182 pages of imagery that will change your shoreline perspective for life.

Sure, there’s a heavy surf vibe. Kelly Slater and Jack Johnson offer forwards. Much is made of the coveted tube, but this isn’t a book just for surfers. The star is Hawaii, its beaches and where the sea detonates on dry land. In that explosive moment, Clark captured shapes and colors that reflect all sorts of surprises. Boiling sand, frozen waves, chandeliers, foxes, burning cane fields – even the late Hawaiian King Kamehameha makes a watery appearance. So do a pair of flesh-and-blood surfing rats.

Unlikely? Perhaps. But thanks to Clark, we can sit in the impact zone and safely ponder views few have ever seen. That’s a luxury that makes this photo book special for any island lover. Check it out at: www.ClarkLittlePhotography.com
