City of Lions

The last creature I expect to see on an island prowls the streets of Ponce, Puerto Rico. I see a lion at almost every street corner! These statuette beings guard the downtown Plaza de las Delicias giving the town the nickname of "La Ciudad de los Leones”.  Here lies the historic century old Ponce Fire Corps known as Parque de Bombas. Built for the 1883 World’s Fair, the red and black striped building was the first fire department on the island. It now serves as a museum and is one of the most photographed buildings in Puerto Rico. I have to get my picture in front of this! The locals say, “If you don't visit the firehouse, you have not been to Ponce”. Tours are offered in English and Spanish, and every Sunday the municipal band plays. The plaza is also home to the all-white-and-gold Ponce Cathedral. It is one of four in Puerto Rico, and lies directly in the middle of the plaza, guarded by a golden lion. I look in awe at this amazing structure. As evening approaches I visit La Guancha Paseo Tablado, a boardwalk home to the Virgin’s Cross Observation tower. I have never seen a more inspiring view of where the sea greets the mountains. I feel like a true Puerto Rican.
