Putting Yourself Out There

There are obvious perks to to working for ISLANDS magazine: sit on a beach, drink margaritas, sleep-in and get a tan... While getting paid. All great things. But my favorite part? Putting myself out there and doing things I never thought I could do, or would ever get to do.

Doing so makes for my best stories and most memorable travel experiences. Travel like a traveler. Get out of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself. My take: things aren’t just going to come to you; you have to seek them out.

In the past few years, I’ve flipped a snowmobile on a glacier in Iceland, got ran over by a Segway in the D.R., and learned to dive in Cozumel. I even got to meet Guy Harvey in Bimini.

Traveling changes you. And it’s addicting. Come back from one trip, and you’re already craving another. Why? Because it’s hard, tiring, stressful. And just fantastic.

Dear Ashley... I am sitting

Dear Ashley... I am sitting at my desk, having an afternoon cup of tea, and taking a few moments to visit some of my most loved websites, including Islands.com. After scrolling the homepage your blog post catches my eye.

A few years ago I fell in love with two things, my husband and photography. When I met my husband, I was searching for a new direction in life. Not only did he help show me the way but he introduced me to a world I had never known existed, by whisking me away to fabulous tropical destinations all across the planet. Here he taught me how to take the road less traveled and how to think and live like the locals.

On one of our first trips, I borrowed my now father-in-law's camera and haven't put one down ever since. I was in awe of what I could I do with my photos and the feedback from those I had shared them with. It's amazing how willing people are to share their stories if you ask and I make a point of putting myself out there, asking for a photo when inspiration strikes.

This past year, I lost my mother to cancer, a story so many of us are too familiar with. My mother was a poet, and after she died I was left with this wonderful record of her poetry, a glimpse into her heart and soul. I read through the pages and often wonder what her dreams were, did she hope to publish her work? could it of been a success? who did she most want to reach out to? I'll never know now and that's OK, they're the most precious thing I have from her and they mean the world to me!

This combination of experiences and feelings have caused me to reflect on my own life and how I'm spending my time. At the end, what will have made me happy? I have my health, I have a great love and family but am I satisfied with my work? Has that part of my life where I pour so much of my energy and time made me feel like I did what I was meant to do?

Ashley, I have no real formal training as a photographer, I take some classes and am working on a certificate right now at a local community college, I have never been published and I've sold 3 photos to date, and shot 2 weddings for some friends. Your blog post, just the title alone, has answered the thing that has been most pressing on my mind for, well, the longest time now. I have to put myself out there and this response is step one.

It is truly a pleasure reading Island magazine. The photos and articles take me to my happy place and I know that shooting for a magazine like Islands is exactly the direction I have to head in. I feel it in my bones.

Thank-you for this blog post, it has completely inspired me. If you are ever free for a chat it would be wonderful to hear more about your experiences.

Very Best,

Catherine M
