Raccoon's Milk on This Mexico Island Near Cancun?!
"No cow's milk here, just raccoon's milk." That's what the waiter says when I ask for cream with my coffee, here on Isla Holbox, the island off the Caribbean coast of Mexico just two hours from Cancun. He gets the reaction he was looking for: shock. He promises: "Just joking." But this isn’t the only time the resort’s resident raccoon comes up. When I stroll down the steps of my private bungalow, I relish the silence of the empty Hotel Las Nubes de Holbox. But ahead, I hear a shuffle. Then a scratch and rustling leaves. A furry masked face pops up. I wait for him to scurry away, but he just holds out a paw, expecting a snack. Another resort waiter appears out of the blue with crackers, as if on schedule. Gingerly, I take the "breakfast" from the waiter and hold it within a furry arm’s reach. The well-mannered raccoon reaches up, snatches the crackers and crunches appreciatively. I swear he winks at me. At this resort, I’m learning that fur comes first.
