Vacationing With Johnny Depp vs. Swimming With Pigs
Sure, a Johnny Depp sighting would be nice, but I really just want to swim with the pigs in the Bahamas’ Exuma Cays. It’s the stuff of sideshows, and I must join in. The snorters divide their time between frolicking in the Atlantic, sunning on Big Major Cay’s southernmost beach (lovingly known as Pig Beach) and charging approaching boats for food. They’ll eat scraps of any kind but are partial to lettuce, and while they look as if they might head-butt you, they really just want your leftovers. How’d they get here? The most convincing theory is that the pigs were proving a nuisance to nearby homeowners and were gathered up and dropped off on this uninhabited isle. Its beach held big curb appeal for boaters, who would anchor for a swim, a picnic … and an unwitting pig attack. They’d drop their food while fleeing, and before long the pigs realized that the sound of boat motors meant food. Now travelers come from all over to spend an afternoon with the porkers. And in 2013 I’ll be one of them, happy as a pig in … turquoise water.
