From Wales: Baskerville Hall
“I wander onto the set of my favorite mystery one stormy day in the small town of Hay-on-Wye, Wales. The moors are still brown and flecked with snow, so instead of hiking, I duck into the Murder & Mayhem bookstore. The town has 1,500 residents, but 31 bookstores, proving that the Welsh people love a good story. I flip through Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous Sherlock Holmes tale, The Hound of the Baskervilles. ‘You know the family lived nearby,’ the elderly lady at the counter says. I think you’re mistaken, I politely say; it was set in England. She shakes her head. ‘It might be set there, but it happened here.’ Which is why, an hour later, I drive down a country lane to a 19th-century manor. Carved in the stone crest above the door is a wolf’s head pierced by an arrow. The name of the estate? Baskerville Hall, of course.”
