Why a Painkiller Drink in the BVI is a 2013 Must-Do
It’s practically a crime around here: I’m a Painkiller virgin. That’s right, I’ve never had one (please don’t tell my fellow editors). Yes, I understand that the Painkiller is the Caribbean drink. I am well aware that I should order the original from the British Virgin Islands’ Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke, where creamy coconut, dark rum, fruit juices, cinnamon stick and — waitaminnit, is that nutmeg?! — will whisk me to my happy place. And I know that I know any of this only because readers, Web visitors, Facebook fans and Pinterest pinners rave constantly about the potent punch — even when they’re not drunk. The Painkiller recipe on our website is visited more than our entire BVI online guide, for Pusser’s sake! So I solemnly vow to knock back a cupful in the very near future, even if I myself am soggy from the swim from boat to bar, and even if non-Caribbean society insists that anytime before noon is way too early to drink (puh-leez!). But no way am I telling the Soggy Dollar bartender that I’m a Painkiller virgin. After all, he might not hear me clearly over the Jimmy Buffett blasting from the sound system and leave out the rum. And that would be the real crime.
