Raglan Break

It's day 3 in New Zealand. I'm sitting overlooking the break at Raglan. I've spent the last two hours paddling through these waves, and wish I could have stretched the session longer. It's Autumn here, and my wetsuit was no match for the chill of approaching Winter. My whole body has gone numb, and after hiking from Auckland to Raglan, I'm thankful for a bit of relief.

likuliku

Yes, we really, really like Likuliku Lagoon Resort on Fiji's Malolo Island. It's the focus of this week's featured wish. And I'm looking at a custom poster of the resort that we had printed here at the ISLANDS offices. It was for a presentation on how one great photo can show up on an ISLANDS cover, on the ISLANDS Facebook page, in the ISLANDS e-newsletter, in an ISLANDS wallpaper, and of course, pinned like crazy by all of you wonderful Pinterest fans. We told our friends at Likuliku and they sent us...

“An island situated within a lake, within an island, within a lake, within an island.” This was the only thing my brother wanted to talk about on our Flight from JFK to Manila. He didn't care about scuba diving, or blue water – his only concern was seeing an island that reminded him of our inflight movie. The inception-esque island is called Volcan Pointe, and it's almost too small to build a house on.

Island bathrooms

Where is the island bathroom in this photo? Astute viewers will see some hints in the image. I came across this while working with Eddy Patricelli on this week's Wish List photo essay, which we'll release on Wednesday (sign up for the ISLANDS e-newsletter to get the alert). Amid all his beautiful images of this exotic locale -- overwater bures, rolling green hills, secluded beach -- was this winner. No joke, we've been thinking about doing an islands bathroom roundup. Every once in a while, one of our photographers will ...

Best Islands to Retire On: Roatan

It's coming: the ISLANDS' annual "Best Islands to Live On" extravaganza. We've been pouring over research, expat stories and beautiful photos to pull together the list for this year. I was about to give you a sneak peek of some of the photos; you should see the Hawaii house that ISLANDS photo editor Lori Barbely shot. You'll want to move right now. But instead ...

Flying Fox

As super photographer Jon Whittle put the finishing touches on the new ISLANDS Wish List: Find the Secret America, he shared one of his greatest moments on these South Pacific islands, which focused on the creature you see in this photo. Sorry, Jon, if I'm not doing this justice, but there he was, under a pitch-black night sky in the middle of the ocean, the light from the stars so bright that it lit up the island as strong as moonlight. He looked up and saw the constellation Scorpio and the big, bold, beautiful Milky Way. And then ...

American Samoa Jon Whittle self-portrait

I'm working on a special ISLANDS Wish List project -- "Find the Secret America" -- and I love this photo. This guy is acclaimed ISLANDS photographer Jon Whittle, and he's so happy because he's rowing in the Pacific Island off American Samoa. Tutu'ila Island, to be exact. Jon had an amazing trip there, which we're collecting into a digital photo book that we'll release later today. I'll give you a heads up in today's ISLANDS e-newsletter. (And no, Jon doesn't know I posted this.)

Conrad Maldives Resort

We ISLANDS editors love wallpapers just as much as you do. We're preparing a major rollout of the ISLANDS Wish List -- think a wish a week -- and it has us diving into our image bank for our favorites. One of my personal favorites is this shot from the Maldives: "Wake up underwater." This is a wish I'd love to come true. See more in the ISLANDS Wallpaper Gallery, which I'll be filling up with the help of our photo editor and worldly photographers.

Cuba Rides

Three journalists share their mis-adventures while traveling around Cuba.

JOE YOGERST: On assignment in Cuba, I rented a car and was driving from Moron to Santa Clara, and the map was unclear. It was late in the day and I was running low on gas. I picked up this young guy at a round-about, hoping he could give me directions. Right away he pointed at a road, and off we went. But as it started getting dark (and my gas needle kept dropping), I began to think I’d been duped. About 90 minutes out, we came upon this tiny village, where he asked me to stop: This was his home. He leapt out of the car without a word—wouldn’t tell me if I was even close to Santa Clara. I headed back to Moron, running on fumes and cursing my trickster hitcher the whole way.

JAD DAVENPORT: After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, Cuba lost $6 billion in Soviet subsidies, and the public transportation system died. There were so few private vehicles and buses running between towns that people formed orderly queues at underpasses, offramps, etc. I stopped at an underpass outside Havana driving a Hyundai made for five small people. We crammed in 12. The cops waved me over and said, "Hey, you know it’s illegal to pick up hitchhikers?" I panicked; I was already in the country illegally...

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Celebrate Earth Day, April 22, with a free visit to a national park. The National Park Foundation is lifting entrance fees to every inch of its 84 million acres of National Parks not just for the day, but for an entire “Earth Week,” April 21 to 29, 2012.

More than 100 national parks usually charge admission fees, so plan on taking advantage of the free week to celebrate the great outdoors at one of these ISLANDS’ favorites:

- Acadia National Park, Maine

- Christiansted National Historic Site, U.S. Virgin Islands

- Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida Keys

- Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Haleakala National Park, Hawaii

- Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, Hawaii

- San Juan National Historic Site, Puerto Rico
