“Free" is a rare modifier at Atlantis. So when my friend boasted of a hotel that offered free breakfasts, free Internet, and free entry to Atlantis, I knew a kicker was closing fast. "The hotel isn’t on the property," she admitted. Yep, I knew there was a catch. "It’s right there," she said. She pointed to a pink building just down the driveway from Atlantis’ Coral Reef Towers. Between me and it, a sidewalk. No major intersections. “The hotel isn’t advertised on the Atlantis website,” she beamed. “You know, because it’s the Comfort Suites.”

Lavish resorts. Infinity pools. If there’s such a thing as a complaint in the Maldives, it’s that my visits rarely allow much exploring or a chance to meet many locals. The resorts – and the scattered nature of the region’s 1,190 islands -- make staying put easy. Too easy. On my last trip, however, I discovered the Four Seasons Explorer, a luxury dive boat that carries 22 guests on 3-, 4-, and 7-night safaris through the archipelago.

The Hawaiian islands have long held one of ISLAND's top spots in our rankings of best places to live or visit. But getting there can seem just a little too expensive to some travelers. That's why when we spot a good deal, we like to crow a little about it. Ka’anapali Beach Hotel in Maui is touring what it calls "an enriched cultural experience," offering a variety of ways for guests to enjoy the Hawaiian culture.

It's snowing across nearly every civilized corner of the United States and doctor offices are filling with flu victims. Can you think of a better time for a drink? Don't sweat it; this tropical drink recipe might actually scare off the bugs floating around out there too. Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar has just concocted a tasty new drink recipe that combines those sweet and juicy Clementine oranges -- fresh off the branches this time of year -- with the "medicinal punch" of some select liquors. It's called a "Be My Clementine" and, with Valentine's Day also fast approaching, it couldn't come at a better time.

I don’t get it. From the moment I landed on Oahu, I’ve heard more about its snow cones than its beaches. OK, not snow cones. They call it shave ice (leaving off the “d,” a pidgin held over from Japanese immigrants who never mastered the hard stop at the end of some English words). Locals have directed me to five “best shave ice” stands. Now a friend says, “Go to Waiola, in Moiliili. It’s the original.” If I don’t, he says I’ve blown my entire week. Really? Shave ice is that important? When I was growing up in New York City, I’d see men selling flavored ice or Italian ice or snow cones or whatever you want to call it. They had pushcarts in front of parks or at the top of subway stairs, and their arms were toned from sliding a planer over the ice blocks. They’d mound the ice into paper cones and add a drizzle of syrup from bottles that glittered disco red, green and blue. How different could shaved ice taste here in Hawaii? Um, I mean ...

Sure, a Johnny Depp sighting would be nice, but I really just want to swim with the pigs in the Bahamas’ Exuma Cays. It’s the stuff of sideshows, and I must join in. The snorters divide their time between frolicking in the Atlantic, sunning on Big Major Cay’s southernmost beach (lovingly known as Pig Beach) and charging approaching boats for food. They’ll eat scraps of any kind but are partial to lettuce, and while they look as if they might head-butt you, they really just want your leftovers. How’d they get here? The most convincing theory is that the pigs were proving a nuisance to nearby homeowners and were gathered up and dropped off on this uninhabited isle. Its beach held big curb appeal for boaters, who would anchor for a swim, a picnic … and an unwitting pig attack. They’d drop ...
