The Aloha Code
Early in 2008, ISLANDS contributor Amanda Jones visited the Big Island of Hawaii, hoping to go beyond the typical traveler's experience and see just how deep she could go. In this intimate journey into the heart of one of the most culturally rich islands, she encountered the people and places that make the Big Island so unique.

Like the Big Island, islands across the South Pacific are part of a movement to reclaim and reinforce ancient traditions. In talking with people like Danny Akaka, a member of the Hawaiian revivalist movement; Chef Olelo pa'a, who literally captures the local flavor; and Jason Mock-Chew, a taro farmer in the Waipi'o Valley; Jones uncovers the true meaning of the aloha spirit. Stay at A Piece of Paradise's Shangri-La, which is as luxuriously hidden as any resort one could ever find. Another bed-and-breakfast is the Waipi'o Wayside Inn, a historic sugar plantation in Honoka'a, waipiowayside.com. For a different kind of getaway, Mauna Lani Point is situated on the Kohala Coast, where Hawaiian royalty once vacationed, maunalanipoint.com.

Eat a private dinner concocted by veteran chef Olelo pa'a Faith Ogawa. Ogawa's "conscious Hawaiian cuisine," overflowing with genuine aloha spirit, is highly sought-after on the island, mixing creativity with healthful local ingredients. Ogawa cleanses her thoughts before cooking in order to serve the food in its purest form, and she constantly creates new dishes, each designed to help clients erase toxic memories so they can experience joy, abundance, peace and understanding. glowhawaii.com
