Ratua Private Island, Vanuatu
A trip to Ratua Private Island and you’ll understand why many consider Vanuatu to be the happiest place in the world. The resort’s 15 villas were brought to Ratua from nearby islands and fit the resort’s mission to preserve resources. The anonymous owner of this 146-acre island returns all profits back to the local community to build schools and hospitals. It’s no wonder the staff is so delightful and eager to please their guests.

Dispatches: Greetings from Paradise Island, Bahamas
My room number has five digits.
As in, room number 11-544. Can I tattoo this number onto my hand? You know, so I can find my room, or simply remember to keep looking for it? I’ve been distracted by a Maya temple, Chihuly glass sculptures, underwater ruins, 12-foot manta rays, shopping malls, slot machines and thousands of smiling kids — slipping and skipping through miles of water slides, rivers and aquariums.
Of course, all this is Atlantis, visionary Sol Kerzner’s take on the mythical sunken city, raised from the depths as a modern-day, semi-sunken resort. Perhaps the world’s most ambitious. I’m here for a travel conference. It’s an odd setting for one. Atlantis is decidedly not the Bahamas, nor travel. It’s a fantasy. A megasize one.
Now, if only I could locate my room in it all ... whoa, a race-car track?!”
Review: Saveur's Easy Italian Cookbook
The recipes for my favorite Italian meals — that’s all my mom asked for as I headed to Sicily. It seemed like a simple request. But I don’t speak Italian, and I’m no chef, so I returned home with a collection of kitchen disasters.
And then I discovered Saveur’s Easy Italian cookbook for the iPad and iPhone. Its 30 recipes show that many of Italy’s most satisfying foods are also the world’s simplest. Find tips, wine pairings and a breakdown of the lore of Italian food without leaving home — did you know minestrone means big soup? Cook up pasta with lamb and almond pesto, and you too can pretend to be in Palermo shouting “Mangia! Mangia!
Stay Here: Life of Whoa
What does it take to get to a beautiful private island resort? Three planes, a golf cart, and a boat got us to Petit St. Vincent.
Open Floor Plan
I’d say this villa is decent in size. But when I slid two glass doors open, the place was basically down to two walls. The sea and constant breeze became an extension of the villa. I felt like an invisible king on the hill.
Talking Flags
The resort has its quirks. No phones. No TVs. Quiet beyond belief. When I wanted a drink or a towel, I’d raise a yellow flag outside, with a note. A guy would swing by in a Mini Moke, drop off what I requested and disappear.
Outside Life
Only once did I see a boat cruise past the shoreline. I did find two restaurants on the other side of the private island, both within walking distance — or within reach of a Mini Moke with the help of that little yellow flag.
How to Do the Galápagos in 8 Days
“The Galápagos are a desert-island adventure — swimming with penguins, hiking past giant tortoises. To see it all without any hassle, jump on a weeklong cruise aboard a small ship like I did on the M/V Eclipse.” —Jad Davenport, writer/photographer

Review: Sleep Tight with the Wave Cave
When I was a teenager, no beach was too far. No bed was no problem. So long as surfable waves unfurled offshore, I’d happily sleep on the sand. Now I wouldn’t dare. And with the WaveCave, I don’t have to. The travel-ready surfboard bag, made from durable, high-quality materials, unzips into a tent, complete with a mattress and waterproof canopy. Pure luxury for a surfing teen; pure relief for an aging 40-year-old. —Eddy Patricelli

Review: Booq's Cobra Pack
Don’t call it a backpack. Booq’s Cobra pack is like Fort Knox for your electronics. These days, travelers tend to bring more electronics than underwear on trips. The pack’s waterproof zippers, rugged nylon exterior, water-resistant rubberized bottom and rigid-frame laptop compartment lined with soft fabrics let you rest easy when the flight attendant forces you to stuff your bag in a tiny overhead bin.
