Grand Prize
Marko Dimitrijevic
Inhambane Bay, Mozambique
“These fishermen are pulling their dhow to shore to bring it home. I was on a dive boat when I saw them on this island. My group stopped to chat, but we couldn’t communicate much in their dialect. The scene reminded me of those early 20th-century images of Africa. So I went for a backlit composition to silhouette the people. Later, I cropped the sky to make the image longer, then processed it as sepia tone for a timeless effect. I enjoy taking photographs, but I’m no pro. When I see this image, I just see a wonderful souvenir.”
