When you make hotel reservations nowadays you expect to pay a premium for an oceanview. But not at the five-star Fairmont Royal Pavilion, where all 72 guestrooms are perched right on the edge of one of Barbados's best beaches. Wander out onto your expansive private terrace during the day and you'll feel so close to the ocean that you can almost touch it. Linger there as the sun is setting and you've got a vermillion sky to go with your rum punch cocktail.
Yet the Caribbean Sea also plays a starring role in the Palm Terrace restaurant. The water almost reaches the linen-clad tables of this Moorish-style fantasy and contributes to its reputation as one of the most romantic dining venues on Barbados's west coast. A great idea is to meet in the adjacent bar for pre-dinner drinks and complimentary canapés, inducements such as Lobster Spring Rolls, Seared Red Snapper and Slow-Roasted Banana Tatin on the menu when you finally take your water-side seat.
Indeed The Fairmont Royal Pavilion is a decidedly grown-up resort. Yet whilst only children over 13 years of age are accepted during the peak winter months,children of all ages are invited to join their parents throughout the summer months, between 1 April and the 31 October. But don't expect the tranquil mood to change that much - after all, the beach is half-a-mile long and there's a complimentary kids club to keep them occupied all day.
