Wilson Island
 Overview

The Smallest Getaway
Being trapped on Wilson Island, it's safe to say, is unlikely to feature in a Survivor episode any time soon. Located at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef, a speck in Capricornia Cays National Park, it's home to one of the most original resorts on any island.

At this resort, six luxury tents have been set up in the foliage, so a maximum of only 12 guests can stay at one time. These select few have their run of sumptuous offshore coral gardens, a white- sand beach where giant turtles breed at night and forests filled with native bird life. There are two hosts running the private operation, including the excellent chef.

Wilson's size is essential to the island's allure. It is beyond small - it's miniscule, covering a little more than 5 acres. No human has ever bothered living here. It takes precisely 10 minutes to walk around it completely at a leisurely pace. If it's not the world's tiniest island getaway, then it must be pretty close.

 Plan Your Trip

Enrich your experience with a trek to neighboring Heron Island, which is operated by Voyages Hotels and Resorts, as is Wilson Island. Just a 45-minute boat transfer away, Heron Island offers more extensive accommodations amid nature and solitude. Multi-resort rates available from $145 on Heron Island and $390 on Wilson Island, including transfers. voyages.com.au

Time your visit to see sea turtles hatching (January to March), Wedgetail Shearwaters learning to fly (April to May), whales migrating (June to October) or corals spawning (November to December). Check Wilson Island's Bio Calendar to find out which natural phenomenon will be happening during your trip.

Choose your favorite Australian or New Zealand wine before you leave Heron Island and bring it with you to paradise. Select local reds, such as Coldstream Hills Sauvignon Blanc, Brokenwood Cabernet Merlot, Coldstream Hills Reserve Pinot Noir or whites like Bollinger and Louis Roederer Blanc de Blancs 2000 from the Cellars Master List.

Sleep in a permanent luxury tent equipped with all the necessary amenities, from battery-operated alarm clocks to clothes racks and hangers, but devoid of any distractions - save for that amazing ocean view.

Walk across the reef with your host, treading a safe route as you glimpse the wonders beneath the crystal-clear water. Learn how the underwater biosphere was formed as your guide points out myriad coral formations, sea cucumbers, crustaceans and reef fish.

Gaze at the countless stars, visible thanks to zero light pollution on Wilson.

Unwind in the community tent and make good use of the on-hand binoculars and decks of cards as you bond with your fellow castaways over gin rummy and eye spy.
