The massive terminal at Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) has a hub-and-spoke layout — a central terminal with gates located along corridors leading from a common hub.
PKX’s 7.5 million-square-foot behemoth is the largest single-building terminal in the world, yet passengers are never more than an eight-minute walk from their boarding gate.
The hub-and-spoke layout was designed to represent the traditional Chinese architectural philosophy of connecting individual spaces through a central courtyard.
Built over a period of five years beginning in 2014, the architectural wonder was made to replace the Nanyuan Airport and ease traffic at Beijing Capital International Airport.
With architectural features including a glass-and-steel design with an iridescent shell and convex skylights, the passenger-friendly transportation hub is also a stunning landmark.
The airport also has tons of amenities, like the on-site yoga room, the Zen-inducing traditional gardens, day spas, 70 bars, restaurants, and coffee shops, and an in-airport hotel.
