VACATIONS
With only a few basic amenities for its handful of year-round locals, seasonal residents, and tourists, Bois Blanc Island in Michigan offers a remote wilderness vacation.
While on the 34 square-mile island, visitors are responsible for their food and lodging if they can't get a room at the only bed and breakfast, The Hideaway.
Also called "Boblo" by the locals, Bois Blanc is best traversed by cars, mountain bikes, and off-road vehicles. Roads are well-graded dirt paths, mainly running near the coast.
You can also hike inland across the 6-mile north-south interior wilderness or rent a kayak to explore the area. If hiking, be aware of the local wildlife, such as bobcats.
Wild camping is common across the park. Consult the island's Recreation Inventory for information on the amenities, campsites, the harbor, and Bois Blanc's docks and parks.
