Observe Alaskan Bears In Their Natural Habitat At This Little-Known Spot

VACATIONS
Nestled in Alaska's misty Tongass National Forest, Anan Wildlife Observatory offers a unique opportunity to observe Alaskan bears in their natural habitat.
Unlike many popular bear-watching spots, Anan Creek draws both black and brown bears due to its annual influx of humpback salmon, which the bears rely on for winter fat reserves.
The observatory, designed to minimize human impact, features a covered platform that allows visitors to safely and closely watch and photograph the bears without disturbing them.
Peak bear-watching season runs from July 5 to August 25. The observatory limits the number of people who can use the space at any time, requiring advance permits or guided tours.
The experience begins with a safety briefing from a U.S. Forest Service ranger, followed by a short hike to the observatory, ensuring a respectful and immersive wildlife encounter.
