VACATIONS

Mérida
Yucatán is one of the only Mexican states that the U.S. DOS calls a level-one "Exercise Normal Precautions" destination. Its capital, Mérida, is full of relaxing attractions.
Mérida's crime levels have dropped over the past decade. Vacationers can safely walk the leafy Paseo de Montejo at any time and see mansions, cafes, and boutiques.
Campeche
Campeche is the other Mexican state with a U.S. DOS level-one ranking, and 2024 has seen a huge decrease in crime reported by DataMéxico for the state.
AXA Travel Insurance recommends San Francisco de Campeche as one of Mexico's safest destinations. Visitors to the city can safely see sandy beaches and magnificent ancient ruins.
Los Cabos
While the U.S. DOS classifies Baja California Sur as a level-two state, Los Cabos is a heavily protected tourism zone, and most local crime relates to stolen property.
Playa del Carmen
While the state of Quintana Roo has level-two U.S. DOS classification, Playa del Carmen is protected by a special police force dedicated to safeguarding tourists.
Playa del Carmen vacationers can expect easygoing days of snorkeling, admiring intriguing murals, and checking out the diverse shops, restaurants, and nightclubs.
Puebla
This mountain town is a hidden gem of colonial architecture and fantastic cuisine. Though it has a U.S. DOS level-two rating, crime rates are steady and mostly involve theft.
