Travel expert Rick Steves enjoys the occasional cruise. He has even dedicated an entire episode of his show and authored a guidebook on cruising the Mediterranean.
Your budget is the first step in planning a cruise of the Mediterranean. While you can book an incredibly inexpensive cruise, Steves warns that they aren't exactly budget-friendly.
He says on his website, "The cruise industry is adept at enticing you with extras that add up quickly." These extras include shore excursions and certain drink options.
Instead, Steves suggests you plan ahead and create your own itinerary. If you decide to join an excursion, make sure it's one you can't easily do yourself.
When you're out at sea, Steves advises in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette to "take advantage of other on-board freebies," such as the ship's library and free shows.
He continues, "Hang out by the pool, take an art class or join a trivia game. Read your daily program: There's something free going on virtually every minute of every day."
