By Felix Gott

VACATIONS

Located in central Mexico, Guanajuato is a gorgeous tourist-friendly town that feels like a slice of Italy that's only a few hours' flight from California, Texas, or Florida.
Guanajuato's streets are constrained by ravines and peaks, giving it a European flavor. The city is filled with tiny alleyways, colonial architecture, and underground tunnels.
The gold mines surrounding the city remain one of Guanajuato's most interesting attractions. Another must-see is its Museo de las Momias — Mummy Museum.
The city is also filled with incredible cultural institutions, such as the impressive Museo de Historia Natural Alfredo Dugès and the Museo del Pueblo de Guanajuato.
One real joy is the callejones, the maze of ancient streets and alleyways in the city. Some have fanciful, poetic names with folk tales attached, like the Callejón del Beso.
The once-a-year Festival Internacional Cervantino is an explosion of music, art, culture, and performance that takes over the city and demonstrates Guanajuato's unique charm.
