The Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to the oldest national park in Africa: Virunga National Park. Its diverse ecosystem is home to countless animals, including gorillas.
Unfortunately, violence in the Congo has affected this destination, making it one of the world's most dangerous parks. Its remarkable biodiversity is also its vulnerability.
Olivier Mukisya, a park spokesperson, explained, "The trafficking of natural resources by armed militias is widely recognized as a cause of extreme violence and insecurity."
Tragically, according to the park's official website, more than 200 of Virunga National Park's rangers have lost their lives due to assaults by local militia groups.
Despite the dangers, Virunga National Park is open to the public. The park offers guided excursions to view the iconic mountain gorillas and onsite lodging.
However, keep in mind that visitors have fallen victim to the violence in the park, and must acquire a travel insurance policy of $100,000 for medical and evacuation fees.
