Since Italy is the birthplace of pizza, you have to try it while visiting. However, Italian "pepperoni" pizza isn't what you're used to ordering at home.
If you order a "pepperoni" pizza in Italy, you'll likely be served a pizza loaded with peppers instead. The word "peperoni" is Italian for peppers, so that's what you'll get.
The pepperoni pizza we know is an Italian-American invention. It's easier to make than traditional pizza that includes cured meats, as early Americans worked with what they had.
