This Gorgeous Azores Island Is Arguably Portugal's Most Unique

By Jenna Busch

Terceira is a gorgeous spot in the Azores that combines a volcanic wonderland with Portuguese culture, incredible architecture, and a lush, green landscape.
Terceira is full of charmingly painted houses and villages along with unique spots like lava tubes, caves, and a wine museum. It's a small island, but there is so much to do.
In Angra do Heroísmo, people can wander through the town's historical center and visit the late 15th-century church, Igreja da Misericórdia, along with colorful small chapels.
Make sure to sample the area's wines and the iconic Queijadas da Dona Amélia pastry. Also visit Angra's City Beach in the center of town, which has bars and ice cream shops.
Bull running and bullfighting are popular activities in the summer. You can also hike from Angra up Monte Brasil through the green mountain peaks for views of the island.
The Algar do Carvão volcanic cave features several types of dried lava, and the Gruta do Natal is a lava tube nicknamed the Christmas Cave for the mass held there every December.
