Visit Greece's Third-Largest Island If You Dislike Crowded Beaches

By Eric James Beyer

VACATIONS

Lesbos, Greece's third-largest island, is home to a rich cultural heritage and is perfect for visitors looking to explore the Greek landscape and culture without fighting crowds.
Sigri, a small town on the island's western edge, hosts the Petrified Forest of Lesbos and is a five-minute drive from the out-of-the-way Skala Passatempo Beach and Limena Beach.
Both beaches are set in wide bays with clear water and a distinct lack of crowds. For true solitude, visit Paralia Makara Beach, a stony bay backed by shrubs and fields.
Lesbos also features several archaeological sites, including the ancient theater of Mytilene, the New Archaeological Museum of Mytilene, and the Mytilene Castle.
Food and drink lovers should visit the island's annual summer Ouzo Fest, a celebration of the traditional Greek drink featuring over 40 ouzo brands, live music, and food tastings.
