Travel show host Rick Steves recommends using a money belt to prevent pickpocketing while traveling. On his website, Steves says, "money belts are your key to peace of mind."
Steves wears a money belt anytime he travels, and he considers it a "personal safe" because of the security you get from having your valuables literally on your person.
American tourists are likely to be targeted in Europe, and since it can be easy to get distracted navigating a new city, having peace of mind about your things is invaluable.
It can be awkward to get into your money belt, so Steves says to carry a wallet with a small amount of cash. Then, you can replenish it from your money belt as needed.
Since a money belt is only helpful if it stays on your person, Steves also suggests using a waterproof pouch for your money belt contents when you're going swimming.
