Why Tourists In Hawaii Need Coins On Them If They Rent A Car

Travelers who plan to drive in Hawaii should heed this heads-up: while "smart meters" are being rolled out in Honolulu, parking meters on other islands largely remain coin only.
While free street parking and some free lots are available in places like the North Shore on Oahu, spots can be few and far between, so be prepared with the necessary change.
Though Honolulu's meters accept nickels, dimes, and quarters, it's best to carry quarters in particular. You'll likely burn through a whole lot of dimes and nickels.
In addition, make sure you follow all parking regulations. You may be ticketed if you're overstaying your welcome or if you park in free parking areas for events held elsewhere.
