Guess What's Next: December 2009

At this private island resort, living on the edge means staying in the private residence called Udu, pictured here. If this cliff-side location is too precarious for your taste, opt instead for one of the 24 other bures, or bungalows, strewn about this 5-square-mile island off the coast of Fiji's Taveuni. Once the private retreat of Malcolm Forbes, the resort is now open to the public. But it is still awash with the luxury of a publishing magnate (think private airstrip, stone tubs on private balconies and sweeping lagoon views from every angle). Amid all that ambience, Forbes' legacy of philanthropy exists too: Locals who were educated and employed by Forbes' school and farming projects still thrive on the island. All of that, and it has been named one of ISLANDS' favorite intimate escapes. Who knew that life on the edge could be this enticing?
