Tiger Woods-Designed Golf Course Coming To Oahu

The Masters champion is the architect of one of two courses being constructed for the Mākaha Valley Resort.

Before he thrilled golf fans with a victory at the 2019 Masters tournament, Tiger Woods was revealed as a lead architect for one of two new golf courses being constructed for the Mākaha Valley Resort on Oahu. Woods' TGR Design company is overseeing development of the Mākaha North Course, which will be located on Oahu's west coast, set against the Waianae Mountain Range and Mt. Ka'ala.

"At TGR Design, we focus on finding spectacular locations to design distinct and memorable golf courses. The Mākaha Valley on the west coast of Oahu is truly one of these unique and special locations," Woods said of his company's latest project. "The cathedral-like setting of the property is framed with big ocean views to the west and towering mountains to the east. We are designing a golf course that will take advantage of this spectacular setting yet still be fun and playable for golfers of all abilities."

Gil Hanse, who created the Olympic Course in Rio de Janeiro, is developing the Mākaha Valley Resort's South Course. Commissioned by Pacific Links International, both course designs promise to be as challenging as they are scenic, as golfers will find the open fairways and large greens surrounded by unforgiving obstacles.

"Through the creativity and ingenuity of both Tiger Woods and Gil Hanse, and the natural beauty of the Mākaha Valley, we will create one of golf's finest and most sought-after destinations, and we look forward to sharing further details with the golfing world as the project develops," explained Du Sha, owner and founder of Pacific Links International.

In addition to the two golf courses, the mixed-use Mākaha Valley Resort will also feature an arts and community center, health and wellness facilities, timeshare and golf villas, and multi-family residential units. The resort's many parts will be connected by a series of hiking trails that will also feature cultural landmarks, like the 17th century temple Käne'äkï Heiau.

The Mākaha North Course is the latest addition to Woods' growing tropical golf portfolio. In 2014, he performed the ceremonial tee shot at his El Cardonal course at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas, and in 2017 he announced that he will be developing The Playgrounds, a 10-hole short course in the private Bahamas development Jack's Bay.
