Tobago Adventure: Top Picks

Tobago is a lush, forested jewel of the southern Caribbean. When you aren't relaxing on the beaches, diving off the shores or dancing in the festivals, head into the nature for these adventurous activities.

Birdwatching
Tobago has such a diverse habitat and a close-enough location to the South American mainland that an incredible species of birds come to vacation here. The white-tailed sabrewing is one of the best birds to see, since really the only other place the hummingbird is found is on a peninsula in Venezuela. But there are more than 200 other bird species to spot as you look into the mangroves near Buccoo and the Main Ridge Forest Reserve. See if you can spy the blue-crowned motmot and the fun-to-say chachalacas.

Little Tobago
This uninhabited island off Tobago proper is itself a seabird preserve, also known as Bird of Paradise Island. It's just five square miles of nature. You must see the red-billed tropicbird — hard to miss with a colony of up to 2,500 on Little Tobago and sporting long tail streamers.

Turtle watching
From March through September, see the leatherback sea turtles head to Tobago's beaches. The endangered creatures are well guarded and well respected as visitors watch.

Waterfall swimming
Argyle Falls makes for a beautiful swimming hole, especially in the morning when you have a better chance of having the falls almost to yourself.

Glass-bottom boat tours
Head out to Little Tobago and Buccoo Reef to see the wonders below, and even jump in for some snorkeling.

Kayaking
Bon Accord Lagoon is one of several great places in Tobago for kayaking, as you explore the water along the mangrove-lined shore.
