This Vibrant City Near Atlanta Is In The Top 3 Destinations To Visit For A Fall Getaway

When you think of where to go for a fall getaway, you might think of New England destinations, thanks to their world-famous leaf-peeping. However, the South also has its charms when it comes to autumn, and that was made clear with USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards for the "Best Place to Visit for Fall (2026)." Coming in at No. 3 on the list was Woodstock, Georgia. With the city's annual fall events and color-changing leaves, it's no wonder that Woodstock made the top three. Here are just some of the ways you can enjoy this charming city in fall.

On Thursdays throughout September, you can enjoy music by local musicians with the Brown Bag Concert Series. They play in the gazebo at the Park at City Center, so you can picnic while you enjoy the free tunes. September is also the month for the Taste of Woodstock. Dozens of local food vendors come together for an afternoon of food and fun, and you get a chance to sample everything from beignets to sushi to Brazilian food. To really get into the spirit of the changing of the seasons, go to Reformation Brewery for its Fall Festival. It's held toward the end of September in the brewery's backyard, under its massive winged elm, and visitors can enjoy apple cider slushes, bobbing for apples, live music, and more.

In October, Woodstock is transformed with the aptly named Scarecrow Invasion. Businesses and residents alike get in on the fun of putting up scarecrows, and the displays range from elaborate and silly to spooky. Over 100 scarecrows are on display throughout the month, and the public can vote on their favorite displays at the Visitor Center. There's also a scarecrow scavenger hunt to help amp up the fun.

In early October, you can sample some of downtown Woodstock's good food and drinks during the Oktoberfest Crawl. Although the best U.S. city to celebrate Oktoberfest is Tulsa, Oklahoma, over a dozen different Woodstock businesses have specials for the one-day event. If you visit five stops, you can get a commemorative stein from the Woodstock Visitors Center (while supplies last). It's the perfect time to wear your dirndl and lederhosen if you have some. Closer to Halloween, there's Ghouls Night Out, where kids can go trick-or-treating at downtown businesses. Similarly, the Halloween Skelebration at the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Amphitheater offers carnival games, mini golf, food, music, and more.

Big Springs Farms is a family-friendly fall destination in Woodstock. It has hayrides, games, a corn maze, and plenty of pumpkins. It's open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from late September through October, and locals love it. One visitor writes on Facebook, "Absolutely a wonderful time, with tons of things for the kids to do from hayrides, face painting, bounce houses and a train ride. Hot apple cider, hot chocolate, bbq, hot dogs and more."

Another good pumpkin patch option in Woodstock is Berry Patch Farms. It's open for pumpkin season on Saturdays and Sundays from the last weekend in September through the third in October. Along with hayrides and pumpkins, there's a petting zoo, hay bale maze, face painting, and a miniature carousel.

To see some autumnal colors in Woodstock, visit Olde Rope Mill Park. It has miles of biking and hiking trails on both sides of Little River, as well as fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. The park got its name from the rope mill that once operated here, and you can still see its historic remains, along with some small waterfalls. The park is just a few miles from downtown, making it a nice, easy nature escape. As one person on Facebook notes, "Olde Rope Mill Park is a beautiful natural area set up for both hikers and mountain bikers. Lots of [winding] trails can be explored and autumn lingers in the beech trees."

The fall weather in Woodstock is generally mild, with average highs around 71 degrees Fahrenheit in October and lows around 53 degrees. It's cool enough to feel like the changing of the seasons, but still warm enough to enjoy being outside, so long as you're wearing layers. Woodstock is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, about 30 miles north of downtown and about 40 miles from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, so it makes for an easy day trip in the area. Even if you can't make it there during fall, Woodstock is a fun city to visit, in general, thanks to its trending downtown scene with vibrant arts and yummy restaurants.

While you're in this region of northern Georgia, Lake Allatoona has sandy beaches, campgrounds, and trails through forested areas that are particularly pretty in fall. The stunning scenery is only about a 15-minute drive from Woodstock.
