Texas is a massive state known for its bustling cities and Southern charm. While many visit the area to explore Dallas and Houston, there's a Southern city between Dallas and the Louisiana border you may want to add to your list. Founded in 1843 and located within Rusk County, Henderson is a historic Texas city, with a population of nearly 14,000 people. According to the city's website, the 12-square-mile community is 130 miles southeast of Dallas and and 66 miles west of Shreveport, Louisiana. Described by Tour Texas as "a charming town full of friendly faces and a healthy serving of Southern hospitality," Henderson appeals to visitors looking for an intimate and leisurely Southern experience.

The destination even has a bit of historic charm, considering its downtown area was added to te National Register of Historic Places in 1995  and named after the first governor of Texas, James Pinckney Henderson. While exploring downtown, visitors can find historical markers highlighting the history of Rusk County and Texas. The area is also home to lakeside parks, locally owned shops, and a variety of restaurants.

Henderson's lakeside parks offer recreation and relaxation

While Texas is home to a number of Gulf Coast destinations with endless outdoor fun, the Henderson area has plenty of lakeside options to explore. Enjoy everything from leisurely walks to fishing at Lake Forest Park, Lake Striker Resort, and Martin Creek Lake State Park. Lake Forest Park is a family favorite located about 2 miles away from the intersection of North and West Main Streets in downtown Henderson. The park attracts many local residents and serves as the venue for the city's annual Independence Day Celebration. At the center of the park's lake is a tall gazebo, a good place to view ducks and geese who inhabit the area. In addition to a disc golf course, visitors enjoy open green space, fishing opportunities, and a playground. There are also plenty of benches and tables that serve as places to relax or eat.

Those seeking a camping experience should consider Lake Striker Resort, about 20 miles southwest of downtown, which has a scenic RV park, cabins, and motel rooms available as lodging options. While there, campers can participate in a variety of recreational activities like kayaking, swimming, fishing, and boating. Alternatively, those interested in fishing may also want to visit Martin Creek Lake State Park, located 18 miles northeast of Henderson. The forested landscape appeals to nature lovers, while fishermen can cast for largemouth bass, crappie, channel catfish, yellow catfish, tilapia, and sunfish from a well-lit pier, according to the state park's website. Visiting anglers do not need a fishing license to fish from shore or pier in a Texas state park. Martin Creek Lake State Park even has fishing rods and more available to borrow, so visitors don't have to lug around their own equipment. Other amenities include a boat ramp, canoe rentals, and a fish cleaning station.

Explore the city's quaint shops and tasty eats for a local experience

If you're truly looking to explore what Henderson has to offer, take some time to explore its unique locally-owned shops and restaurants offering a plethora of tasty bites. Antiquers venturing downtown may stumble upon Better Half Antique Market. The vintage storefront sells antique finds and collectibles, including jewelry, fine china, furniture, and mid-century keepsakes. If you're looking for unique women's fashion items or souvenirs to gift loved ones, SoShee Boutique is another Main Street option. You'll know you're there when you see the large yellow double doors.

After you've worked up an appetite exploring the local shops, you can conveniently access dining options without going too far. Similar to Texas' miracle city of Conroe outside of Houston, Henderson has many tasty eats. For those who enjoy Texas' Mexican cuisine, try Francisco's Restaurant or Jalapeño Tree. Francisco's offers everything from tacos al pastor to enchiladas, while Jalapeño Tree's menu features "crazy good" carne asada and fajitas. If you're craving comfort food, check out Cotton Patch Café or Herschel's Restaurant. Cotton Patch Café's menu features entreés like the grilled Wrangler Steak and savory blackened tilapia. Alternatively, Herschel's Restaurant is a family-style dining option popular in East Texas. Enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner options like steak and eggs and stuffed baked potatoes. If you're craving barbecue and live music, then Bedford, a charming Texas city between Dallas and Fort Worth with small-town vibes that may be worth checking out.
