This Overlooked California Town Is Full Of Beaches, Historic Sites, And Boutiques

Los Angeles and San Francisco may be California's most illustrious cities. But beyond these metropolises, the Golden State is home to various charming lesser-known destinations ideal for a mellow getaway. One of these is Carmel-by-the-Sea, a stunning village that will make you feel like you're in Europe. Located on the Central Coast, about two hours from San Francisco, it's one of the best small towns in California. Carmel, famed for its storybook-style architecture, has much to offer to all travelers.

First and foremost, you'll find several beaches, including Carmel Beach, known for its white sand, and Monastery Beach, which is gorgeous but has a horrifying nickname. Are you a history buff? Set off to explore the Carmel Mission and its museum via a self-guided tour. The 1770s-era site opens Wednesday through Sunday with varying hours. Then there's the historic Tor House, an impressive stone structure built by poet Robinson Jeffers that dates back to the early 1900s. The Tor House provides guided tours every Saturday.

Those who want to indulge in some shopping during their vacation can head to Ocean Avenue in Downtown Carmel. Visitors will discover countless local boutiques and businesses, including Laub's Country Store/Carmel Classics and Augustina Leathers. The latter sells souvenirs, and the former sells jewelry, clothing, and more. In addition to all of this, Carmel is also a culinary hub.
