Nestled In Germany's High Black Forest Is A Scenic Glacial Lake With A Spa Garden, Serene Swims, And Idyllic Hikes

A mountain lake, a forest trail, and a spa garden might sound like three separate vacations, but there's a spot in Germany's Black Forest that wraps them into a single destination. Here, the dark green conifers of the forest come all the way down to the edges of Lake Titisee, with the peaks of the Feldberg massif and Hochfirst rising up around it. Visitors can hike through the woods and up to viewpoints above the shore, or step into the lake itself for a swim in the bathing area. Along the shore, a traditional German spa garden offers landscaped paths and breathtaking views, sometimes with live music to accompany the scenery.

Lake Titisee sits in the Black Forest of Baden-Württemberg (one of the destinations locals say you can't skip on a trip to Germany). Specifically, it's in the southern Black Forest, known as the Hochschwarzwald ("High Black Forest"), under an hour by train from Freiburg im Breisgau or about a 1.5-hour drive from the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg. Given its setting, this spot offers visitors distinctive scenery: dense evergreen woods, lush valleys, and the slopes of the Feldberg massif, whose almost 5,000-foot summit is the highest point in the Black Forest, according to Hochschwarzwald Tourismus. During the last Ice Age, a glacier from the Feldberg pushed through this part of the Black Forest, scouring out the basin that now holds the lake. But it still has a link to the mountain above, too — it's fed by the Seebach stream, which flows down from the Feldberg and keeps its waters fresh.

The public bathing area, Badestelle Titisee, gives swimmers a relaxing way to enjoy the lake, with a lawn along the shore where you can stretch out before slipping into the water. The area has changing facilities, toilets, beach chairs, and a kiosk. Reviewers have noted that it can draw a crowd, but the waters still offer plenty of space for a peaceful swim. The bathing area is free to enter, with the open season ru nning from May through October.

Lake Titisee's forested shores and surrounding hills provide more places to explore. For a gentler hike, the Titisee Lake Circuit covers about 3.6 miles following the shoreline. It opens onto views of pure blue with the Feldberg in the background, though it's partly on a road. For a more challenging trek, you could take on the 6.6-mile loop trail from Titisee to Hochfirst, the town's local mountain. The highest point is around 3,924 feet, and from here you can look across the water and even out to the Alps.
