Goodbye Napa Valley, So Long Sonoma County: This Less-Crowded California Wine Region Has Award-Winning Sips

Looking to sip some wine? Napa Valley and Sonoma County may be among the most popular California wine destinations, but Edna Valley offers a less crowded alternative with more than two dozen tasting rooms on the Central Coast. The wider San Luis Obispo County packs in more than 250 wineries, while Edna Valley wineries are especially known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. In comparison, Napa Valley has over 400 wineries, while Sonoma County is home to more than 425 wineries. A cluster of Edna Valley's wineries sits just a few miles apart, making it easy to visit several in one day without the scale or crowds found in Napa Valley or Sonoma County.

The region's wines have also earned recent awards. At the 2026 Los Angeles International Wine Awards, Wolff Vineyards' 2024 Riesling won Best of Class Gold. Its 2023 Chardonnay earned another gold at the same competition and took home a second gold at the 2026 Sunset International Wine Competition. Visitors can try other award-winning wines at nearby wineries, which offer tastings ranging from flights and double-blind tastings to vineyard tours.

San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport is the closest airport to the area. From the airport, you can catch an Uber or a Lyft, or rent a car. A car is pretty much essential for reaching the wineries, though there are local wine-tour shuttles that you can arrange so you don't have to drive between tastings. SLO Safe Ride offers door-to-door wine tours with stops at a number of select wineries. Or, rent a bike from Foothill Cyclery or Wally's Bicycle Works in San Luis Obispo and follow the 6-mile Core of the Coast trail to five Edna Valley wineries.

Start with Wolff Vineyards, where visitors can sample several of the wines that have won recent medals. At the family-owned and operated winery, a six-wine tasting costs $20. Visitors can bring a picnic for the outdoor seating area or sample finger food snacks at the deli on site. Wolff is located a short 20-minute drive from San Luis Obispo, where you can also enjoy its historic downtown, outdoor adventures, coastal charm, and thriving wine scene.

Claiborne & Churchill is another local favorite. The winery was named the Best Winery for White in 2025 and 2024 by New Times San Luis Obispo, a local weekly newspaper. With a win like that, it's recommended to try the Alsace-style-inspired white wines, including its Gewürztraminer and Riesling varieties. Wine connoisseurs can also do a double-blind tasting and guess the grape, style, and other characteristics using only taste and smell. Plus, guests who identify every wine correctly get their tasting for free. For travelers with another day to explore the state's wineries, continue north to Paso Robles, a California city with fall festivals and an abundance of wine events.

Chamisal Vineyards is listed as the number one attraction in San Luis Obispo on Tripadvisor. During the summer to early fall, you can take a scenic 2-hour vineyard tour. It finishes with a guided tasting and packed lunch. Depending on the day's tasting, guests may have the chance to try Chamisal's Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, two wines the winery is especially known for. After the last tasting, rest at the nearby Pismo State Beach, a 17-mile stretch of California coast known for fishing, surfing, and seasonal monarch butterflies.
