Although the state of Florida has long been recognized as a top destination for retirement, many seniors are trading in the sweltering sun and overcrowded cities for the historic, coastal charm of New England. Connecticut, in particular, is emerging as a top choice for retirees. One of the best places in the Constitution State for retirees to enjoy their golden years is Fairfield County, a charming area along the Long Island Sound filled with gorgeous beaches and picturesque cities.

Nestled between the city of New Haven and the New York state line, many people think of Fairfield County as a pleasant summer escape destination. However, there are plenty of reasons why this breathtaking area is a haven for retirees, too. While the cost of living here is higher than the national average, RetireScorecard points out that residents have excellent access to healthcare, plus there's outdoor recreation, tons of shopping opportunities, and a charming New England atmosphere with four distinct seasons. The county is also less than a 1.5-hour drive from New York City, providing easy access to big-city amenities.

Each city and town in Fairfield County has its own unique appeal, from the storybook charm of Ridgefield to the luxurious atmosphere of Darien, providing retirees with plenty of choices for where to settle down. So, if natural beauty, NYC access, and New England charm appeal to you, look no further than Fairfield County.

The charming towns of Fairfield County

Whether you choose to live right on the coast or prefer to stay more inland, Fairfield County is home to plenty of cities that offer their own unique way to experience New England living. Seniors who enjoy art and cultural offerings may gravitate toward the cute downtown of Westport, a hidden coastal town. Experience theater performances at the historic Westport Country Playhouse, catch a live show at Levitt Pavilion, or peruse the exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Connecticut. Plus, retirees here have the Westport Center for Senior Activities, a sprawling campus that provides the senior community with various classes, workshops, and opportunities to socialize.

Farther north is Ridgefield, a historic town with a storybook feel. As one resident writes on Niche, Ridgefield is "a wonderful place to live, truly out of the Gilmore Girls or some other suburban idealistic TV show." While this friendly community may not be right on the coast, it sits at the base of the Berkshire Mountains, which add plenty of natural splendor for residents to soak up.

If you enjoy shopping, look to the thriving beach town of Fairfield. A stroll along Post Road will reveal countless boutiques selling a variety of goods, whether it's clothing from Jane + Mercer, home decor from The Beehive, or unique vintage finds at Our Place Antiques. This road also has several shopping centers such as Fairfield Center and Brick Walk that house both local and nationally recognized chain shops, so you can get everything you need in one place.

Beautiful beaches in Fairfield County

Similar to Florida, perhaps one of the biggest draws for retirees to Fairfield County is the easy access to beautiful beaches — even if the winters aren't as warm in Connecticut. No matter where you choose to settle down, you're never too far from the scenic shoreline, which stretches for about 30 miles along the Long Island Sound. In the town of Fairfield alone, you'll find five beaches, with Jennings Beach being one of the more popular options. As the largest beach in town, it hosts plenty of activities, including summer bonfires.

Farther southwest is Greenwich, a hub of beachside adventure. Greenwich Point Park, locally known as Tod's Point, is an approximately 147-acre park that features several historic buildings, winding trails, and a sandy beach to enjoy. Greenwich also offers ferry access to two stunning islands: Great Captain Island, a 17.2-acre island featuring a 19th-century lighthouse, and Island Beach, a sandy, 3.9-acre island.

For seniors looking for a smaller, tight-knit coastal community, there's Darien, a beautiful beach town that exudes quiet luxury. It is home to both Weed Beach and Pear Tree Point Beach, great options for those looking for a calmer, more tranquil experience. For even more privacy, Darien is home to the Tokeneke Club, a beach club that offers its members almost 900 feet of private beach to enjoy, among other luxurious amenities.
