High in the Alps rests an artificial lake boasting beautiful turquoise waters. Switzerland's Lac des Dix is the country's largest artificial lake by volume, and its waters are colored by minerals that flow into it from the mountain runoff. The artificial lake holds up to 400 million cubic meters of water thanks to the Grande Dixence Dam, which helps fuel the hydroelectric needs of the country. Lac des Dix is also home to numerous trails, complete with thriving wildlife and views of the Swiss Alps.

When the Grande Dixence Dam was completed in 1961, it became Europe's highest dam. Today, the reservoir it created is a destination for outdoor enthusiasts that offers easy access to alpine pastures and a thriving ecosystem of wildlife and flora. Several species of birds, deer, and ibex call the area home and are easily seen in the spring and summer months. Nearby natural formations include waterfalls and glaciers, giving visitors views of alpine beauty any time of the year.

Travelers can reach Lac des Dix from Sion International Airport in just under an hour; however, commercial flights to the destination are limited. The closest large airport to Lac des Dix is in Geneva, just over a two-hour drive away. Travelers with the ability to take their time to take in views of the Alps along their journey may consider reaching Switzerland from Italy aboard one of Europe's prettiest train rides.

The best time to visit Switzerland's Lac des Dix is in the summer

While snow-covered mountains and terrain are often what springs to mind when picturing Switzerland, the best time to visit Lac des Dix is in the warmer months. That's because the roadways that make the lake and the Grande Dixence Dam accessible are only open from June through October. If you're looking to avoid a swarm of tourists, consider Rick Steve's suggestion for smaller crowds and unbeatable weather in Switzerland.

Some of the best views of the Alpine environment on Lac des Dix come from atop the Grande Dixence Dam. Visitors can access the crest of the dam and take in panoramic views of the Alps and the artificial lake. The crest is accessible thanks to a winding walking trail that takes about 45 minutes to climb. Another popular way to reach the views from on top of the dam is via cable car.

After taking in the views or completing a tour inside the historic dam, visitors will find that it is also home to a climbing wall and zip line. Rental equipment for both attractions is available on site. For tourists looking for a more interactive and peaceful connection to nature, there are a number of hiking trails that begin and end near the walkways of the massive concrete structure.

Hike the miles of trails for spectacular Lac des Dix views

Fortunately, the beauty of Lac des Dix isn't limited to the views from atop the dam. The lake is surrounded by miles of trails that provide spectacular views of the turquoise water and the mountainous views that surround it. Among the easiest and most family-friendly trails along the lake is the Lac des Dix Path. Gentle rises make it navigable for beginner hikers and young explorers while offering views of glaciers, mountain peaks, and tunnels.

More experienced hikers may gravitate to the Plafeuri Hut trail that begins in nearby Hérémence, Valais. The trail stretches nearly six miles and climbs more than 2,400 feet. The challenging trail is popular among backpackers and hikers alike. It's one of 23 trails in the region that lead to the Plafeuri Hut, a modest yet popular stopping place for adventurers in the Alps. The lodge also gives sweeping views of Lac des Dix and the Grande Dixence Dam.

Plenty of other well-marked trails and hikes are available for visitors to Lac des Dix, especially in the warmer season. While it's not impossible to get to Lac des Dix in the winter months, it is challenging. Fortunately, Switzerland is home to several villages in the Alps that transform into winter wonderlands that are easier to reach if your travels take you there during the colder months.
