Between Manchester And Blackburn Is England's Town With A Vibrant Culture, Events, And Shopping
Greater Manchester is one of the U.K.'s most dynamic hubs. It's an official metropolitan area with all the quality restaurants and sporting events that come with a big city. It's also got pockets of nature and suburbs with a more easy-going pace. Bolton is the largest town in Greater Manchester, and a multi-layered, vibrant destination in its own right. As well as a thriving theater scene, festivals, and gorgeous architecture used in many Hollywood shoots, it's home to a soccer stadium and one of the U.K.'s biggest retail parks.
Sandwiched almost exactly 15 miles from Blackburn to the north and Manchester to the south, it's around a 45-minute drive to Bolton from either city. It's easy to reach on public transport, too: The train from Manchester only takes 15 minutes, and the Greater Manchester Bee Network of buses connects the city to the rest of the metro area.
That proximity makes Bolton an easy day trip. But this town of nearly 200,000 inhabitants according to City Population could surely serve as a home base for a Greater Manchester vacation. Bolton has plenty of cozy pubs, a Victorian park from 1866 with a lake and statue-lined promenade, and accommodations for a range of budgets, from chain hotels to snug bed and breakfasts and a spa hotel in a cluster of renovated stone farmhouses built in the 17th century.
Exploring Bolton's architecture, theaters, and food scene
Victoria Square is a solid starting point for a cultural dive into Bolton, as you can admire the towering pillars of the late 19th-century Neoclassical town hall. Le Mans Crescent, a curved landmark with beautiful archways, is on the other side of the hall. With its picturesque sandstone and cobblestone street, you can see why it featured in the TV show "Peaky Blinders" — which is just one of many U.K. filming locations you can visit.
Bolton Museum is on the southern end of Le Mans Crescent. Open daily, it has collections of fine art, botany, and local history, and admission is free. Some of the region's best theaters are within walking distance, too. At the end of the crescent, the Octagon is an award-winning theater that produces distinguished shows, while Albert Halls Bolton has been the cultural beating heart of the city for over 100 years.
Bolton Market has been another piece of the city's heritage since King Henry III granted its charter in 1251. It has classic offerings such as fresh produce, a butchers, and unique gifts, as well as a contemporary food hall where you'll find stalls serving pizza, kebabs, and Caribbean dishes. There's also a gin bar, live music on weekends, and indoor and outdoor tables. Follow Rick Steves' secret to finding 'real ales' while in Britain and you'll be led to Ye Olde Man & Scythe. One of the oldest pubs in the U.K., it's a no-frills place that's served cider and beer since the 13th century.

It has free and paid-for screenings, as well as masterclasses, lectures, and networking events for filmmakers. In the dark days of winter, the center of Bolton bursts with light during the Put Big Light On Festival. The free event features installations, live street performances from acts like the Dundu light puppets, as well as food and drink stands.
Much of the shopping downtown revolves around the Market Place Shopping Center. While modern, the mall is inside Bolton Market Hall, a protected stone building built in 1855. The center has national retail brands, a cinema, and a remodeled, subterranean level with a food court and children's play area. A few miles west of the city, Middlebrook is a retail and leisure park with shops, restaurants, a bowling alley, and a cinema. It's next door to the stadium of the Bolton Wanderers, so you can get that lively English sporting experience.
